Goodbye 24, hello comedy for Elisha Cuthbert! The network confirmed today that it has picked up the single-camera comedy Happy Endings for fall that stars Cuthbert as a bride who breaks up with her groom at the altar. It’s one of three laughers that earned orders today by ABC. The others are Mr. Sunshine, a Matthew Perry (Friends) starrer about the owner of a sports arena, and Better Together, a comedy with Joanna Garcia (Privileged) that focuses on two sisters in different stages of their romantic relationships.

Although Elisha Cuthbert has been absent from the regular cast of the action-packed series, 24, since the third season, she recently spoke about the future of its long-anticipated movie version. The actress, who is currently promoting her new film entitled Captivity, expressed the same eagerness and anticipation many of the show’s fans feel towards the proposed undertaking.

“I’ve got the phone waiting by the bed, and I’m just sort of waiting for it to ring and them to tell me ‘Hey, we’re gonna go do the movie,’” the actress narrated.

News about the proposed big-screen rendition of the hit real-time series surfaced months ago but the project has been put on the back burner indefinitely, due to time constraints brought on by the filming of the actual show. Elisha Cuthbert did consider the idea that the movie could go into production next year when the upcoming seventh season is scheduled to end. She did reiterate, however, that everything depends on her 24 dad, Kiefer Sutherland’s availability and schedule.

“I think Kiefer is so busy getting these seasons done that it’s almost impossible to get anything going…we’ve been talking about it since the first season…but it’s got to be good,” Cuthbert enthused.

An interesting point to consider though, is how the film version will be handled considering the show’s trademark real-time format. Obviously, the time restrictions of a typical motion picture will make it impossible to depict an actual 24-hour cycle. However the producers, writers and directors may deem it appropriate to render a theatrical release of 24, fans will most likely devour the movie if only to witness Jack Bauer in full big-screen action.

In the meantime, fans of the popular series can get some kind of 24 fix with Elisha Cuthbert’s suspense thriller, Captivity, which is set to open on Friday, the 13th.

GUNS is the story behind the headlines of Canada’s mounting gun problem and the lives touched by violence. The two-part, four-hour miniseries featuring an all-star cast telecasts on CBC Television on Labour Day weekend, Sunday, Sept. 6 and Monday, Sept. 7, at 8 p.m.

A gritty and explosive drama, the miniseries tells the story of four families caught up in illegal gun trafficking and the ripple effect this has on their lives. From the streets of Toronto to Dayton, Ohio, and all the way to the front lines of Uganda, GUNS examines the incendiary issues of illegal arms in Canada, the U.S. and around the world. This is the story of the people who traffic guns, the elite police force charged with catching them, and the lives caught in the crossfire.

GUNS follows a pair of Toronto detectives leading an investigation centering on a 23-year-old gun trafficker, Bobby Duguid (Gregory Smith: Everwood, Closing the Ring, The Dark is Rising). Detective Rick Merriweather (Shawn Doyle: 11th Hour, Big Love) and Detective Constable Ford Sanders (Lyriq Bent: Sophie, SAW II-IV) are two dedicated officers from the Weapons Enforcement Unit who struggle to balance family life with an investigation growing in complexity and danger.

Duguid traffics guns from the U.S. and sells them to street thugs. His father, Paul Duguid (Colm Feore: Bon Cop, Bad Cop, Chicago), is the man pulling the strings behind a much larger organization. Paul is a legitimate arms dealer accredited by many governments to sell weapons internationally, but he sells weapons illegally too. Paul comes under increased police scrutiny when Bobby mistakenly shows up at a street level gun dealer’s house that happens to be under surveillance. Trouble
deepens for Bobby after he engages his girlfriend Frances’ (Elisha Cuthbert: 24, Captivity, Love Actually) help and the police begin tracking her movements as well.

GUNS also stars Cle Bennett (How She Move, Odyssey 5) as Conrad Shannon, KC Collins (Doomstown, Poor Boy’s Game) as Derek Wilson, and Stephen McHattie (Diamonds, 300, The Rocket) as Detective Sgt. Clay.

20th Century Fox Home Entertainment has announced the technical specs and special features for the upcoming Blu-ray release of ‘The Girl Next Door‘ and ‘High Crimes‘, which are both scheduled to hit store shelves on September 1st. ‘The Girl Next Door’ will come in unrated form while ‘High Crimes’ will maintain it theatrical cut. For both releases, video will be presented in 1080p AVC accompanied by 5.1 DTS-HD Master Audio soundtracks.

Hollywood once again played host to some of the film industry’s most glamorous women this week as leading ladies dressed to impress at a party ahead of Friday night’s Women In Film Lucy + Crystal Awards.

Flying the flag for Canada was 24‘s platinum beauty Elisha Cuthbert, who joined contemporaries including Mena Suvari and Phantom Of The Opera‘s young star 22-year-old Emmy Rossum, to help toast this year’s honourees, including Definitely, Maybe star Elizabeth Banks who was named the face of the future.

It will be a big night for Jennifer Aniston tonight when she is presented with the 2009 Crystal Award which was established in 1977 to honour individuals seen to help expand the role of women in the entertainment industry.

Applauded for her top multi-tasking in both acting and producing, 40-year-old Jen, who co-founded Echo Films production company last year, has previously spoken of her role off-screen as a “natural progression”.

The Marley And Me star shares her thoughts on life and how she became successful in the business: “I became a comedian probably out of some sort of necessity to survive and be a happy kid because I wasn’t in an environment under the happiest circumstances. But you come through it and find a survival technique that serves you positively in your life. For me that’s been comedy.”

“All you can do is do your work and do it as good as you possibly can,” says the former Friends star. “I know that in the next couple of years I’m going to take the time to stand behind the camera.”

Holly Hunter, who stars in, and executively produces TV crime drama Saving Grace, is another lady whose success will being celebrated at the event. She was named the winner of this year’s Diamond Award, given for innovation on the small screen.

Meanwhile Twilight director Catherine Hardwicke will also be feted at the event with the The Dorothy Arzner Director’s Award: “They don’t think a girl can do a badass action movie? In my mind, I can direct any movie. I don’t see a limit. Maybe other people do, but I don’t”.

Jeffrey Coombs, who played the lead in the original, will have a small part in the remake according to Yuzna, however he won’t be reprising his role as Doctor Herbert West. Instead it will go to Ezra Godden, who has done some tv mainly but also starred in Daggon. Co-starring as his gf / fiancee will be none other than Canadian Cutie Elisha Cuthbert! No word on the rest of the cast at this time though.

“This current rumor about Elisha Cuthbert appearing in the remake of Re-Animator is just that – a rumor,” he says. “Actually the whole idea that we are remaking the movie this summer, in Spain nonetheless, is completely off base…especially as no talent – writer, director, nor actor – has been attached to this project in any capacity whatsoever.”
